Enough is Enough: A Call to Action Against Antisemitism

On 4 December 2024, The Great Synagogue in Sydney stood as a beacon of innovation, unity, and hope during the 100th anniversary celebration of the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. Inside its historic walls, a distinguished group of Jewish and non-Jewish philanthropists gathered to honour groundbreaking advancements in science and technology—proof of humanity's potential to come together for the greater good.

Among the highlights were a heartfelt Welcome to Country by Nova Peris and inspiring presentations from visiting professors and alumni. These achievements, benefiting people from all walks of life, embodied the Jewish value of Tikkun Olam—repairing the world.

However, outside the synagogue, the atmosphere told a different story. A baying mob gathered their chants a stark reminder of the hatred and ignorance that have plagued Jewish communities throughout history. Their presence was a chilling echo of darker times—a sobering reflection of how far society still has to go.

Michael Scott, CEO and Founder of The 2023 Foundation, attended this significant event and penned a powerful piece in Australian Jewish News about the stark contrast between the celebration of progress within and the hostility outside. His message was clear: history teaches us that inaction allows hatred to fester.

As Michael writes:
"Nowhere in recorded history can I find an example of antisemitism resolving itself through inaction. History shows that these movements escalate until confronted by collective moral courage."

The question he poses is critical: When will enough good men and women stand up and say, “Stop”?

At The 2023 Foundation, we believe the time for action is now. This is not about rhetoric but about deeds that make a real difference. Standing against antisemitism and fostering peaceful coexistence requires all of us to act with urgency and resolve.

Let us not be bystanders. Let us act.
